With so many activities taking place it is hard to not mention them all. For the more adventourous types, DNR’s division of Outdoor Recreation has two very popular and thrilling activities, mountain biking and kayaking.
The mountain biking course set up is incredible. It consists of obstacles even an expert would be scared of. (end of exageration) For each obstacle there is a safety volunteer to catch any rider that is about to fall off their bike. The obstacles are pretty intimidating to see, when the riders approach, they slow down when they should be speeding up. The obstacles include a teeter-toter looking ramp and certain planks of wood tilted all different directions.
Kayaking and canoe is another popular stop at the HOEX. Fall creek runs through the park and riders listen to a tutorial on the different strokes they’ll use to paddle the just under a mile.
Fall creek is a slow moving easy to navigate waterway, so whether you have paddled or not, it is fun more than it is strenuous.
Tomorrow, we’ll all be out here again. So don’t feel like you’ve missed anything, if you didn’t get a chance to come Saturday.
I hope to take my shot to the shotgun range. Look for my posting on that experience tomorrow.

We just arrived home after spending all day at Fort Benjamin Harrison. The organization and planning of the day was exceptional from parking, bus transportation from the parking lot, shuttles within the park, and, of course, the unbelievable activities, educational presentations, and wonderful presenters and volunteers. Whoever planned the event was a mastermind! Events were spaced so that there was plenty of room for every activity as well as handling a large number of participants. There were appropriate activities for every age. I’m almost a senior citizen, and I was still encouraged to try mountain biking! (I was terrible, but it was fun!) I rode the off-road vehicles, and canoed down the creek. I learned about trapping, hunting, fishing, bird watching and more, and most importantly listened to club members and DNR workers who loved their work/hobby and were eager to share their knowledge! Thank you for a wonderful day!
Thanks for the compliment. Many, many people worked hard to put this event together. Spread the word!
My ten year old daughter and I spent about 6 hours in the park yesterday and we had a great time. She is working on a report about bald eagles for school and was thrilled to see one in person and have a lot of her questions answered. We rode horses, she tried bow hunting and air guns and fishing. I have a cute fishing picture with her and a volunteer that I would be happy to share. Only thing we were disappointed we missed was trying out the canoes on the river. Had a bit of trouble finding it. Thanks to all the DNR staff and the volunteers for a great day. If this comes back next year, it will be a “must do” event for my Girl Scout troop.
